The Reader Cadets - Principles

Each year around Christmas time we present one of our Reader Cadets with the Reader Cadet award. This award is given to someone who the club believes has been a shining example of the Reader Cadet principles.

The FIE rules state that a fencer must observe strictly and faithfully in an orderly, disciplined and sporting manner the sport of fencing.

The Fédération Internationale d'Escrime or FIE, (International Fencing Federation in English) in fact goes so far as to say that a fencer must remain orderly and must not disturb the smooth running of a bout..not easy when you give a child a sword!

Our principles follow from this desire to adhere to that edict.

R E A D E R stands for:

RESPECT: Showing RESPECT for other fencers and officials - No belittling, ridiculing, bullying or insulting.

ENERGY: Channelling both physical and mental ENERGY into improving ones skill -Taking on the responsibility of time management to improve your fencing knowledge & skill.

AID: AIDING in the smooth running of fencing events/bouts - Without waiting to be asked, but seeing where you can rightly contribute and then contributing.

DISCIPLINE: Showing DISCIPLINED behaviour which follows the rules and instructions of the club - Not affecting the smooth running of the club e.g. disrupting fencing bouts or officials.

ENGAGEMENT: ENGAGING with and showing COMMITMENT to the sport and the club - Being earnest in your attempts to apply your fencing knowledge and fencing skills.

RESPECT: RESPECT for the sport of fencing and the BFC (Bexley Fencing Club) and not bringing either into disrepute - In the outside world and other visited venues reflecting the values of these codes.
